Help Rutherford House Year 5 ‘Save the Water Vole’

Caring, Passionate, Inspired and Dynamic …

… that is the Year 5 classes Ash and Gould from Rutherford House School, Balham!

Having read about ‘Ratty’ in Wind and the Willows the classes did some research to find out that Water Voles in their local area ‘Wandsworth and Richmond’ have declined by 94% and could be extinct by 2031.

So they decided to take action!

They created a #SavetheVole petition which they shared on their social media and school newsfeeds and hoped for 1,500 signatures!

The story was picked up first by local radio station ‘Radio Jackie’ who gave the campaign a mention on 24th June.  Soon after Water Vole Naturalists and charities supporting their protection joined in re-tweeting and sharing, the petition had reached over 15,000.

The MP for Wandsworth Dr Rosena Allin-Khan and local Councillor Claire Fraser have signed, liked and shared the petition.  The pupils have also written to the Mayor of London and the Prime Minister.

Then earlier this week (28/7/21) Sally Williams, ITV Weather and ITV London News reporter picked up the story and went into Rutherford to meet the teachers and pupils ! They published the story on ITV London News 6pm Thursday 1st July 2021

The petition, as at 11am Friday 2nd July 2021, has now received just under 30,000 signatures and aims for at least 35,000.  So with more likes and shares happening across our Trust and social media, we cannot wait to see where the total will be by the time it closes!

We really hope the BBC nature shows like Countryfile or Springwatch will be interested to take up the story and get in contact with us or Rutherford House School directly.
