Debate Competition 2023

Kilburn Grange School and Braywick Court School hosted the annual BPET Debate Competition for the London and Berkshire hubs respectively, today 7 June 2023. Six BPET schools took part in the competition, with guest school The Heights joining the Berkshire hub.

Facilitated by Noisy Classroom, 48 children prepared during the morning, practised during a workshop after lunch, and finally battled it out on topics such as “should homework be banned”, “is it good or bad to be famous” and “should we have a ban on junk food”.

The skills learnt by the children, and on which their performances were judged on, were:

  • Rebuttal: respectful and polite listening followed by constructive counter argument
  • Confidence: expressed in their tone of voice and body language in delivery
  • Explanation: the reasoning about their point of view on the topic at hand

We were very impressed with the standard of articulation and eloquence displayed by all teams, how pupils used appropriate debating terminology, how they handled questions from the audience and delivered their points of view.

The winners for the London hub were Deer Park School for the second year in a row, whilst our guests The Heights won the trophy for the Berkshire hub.
